Chapter 37

Joe

November 21, 2:00 P.M., Nearing Healthlife Hospital

Joe was on edge. This was the first time he’d ventured out on an expedition. He felt especially exposed once they’d left the perceived safety of their walled community behind. Not knowing what to do with himself, he got into the habit of checking his weapon, his pockets, then staring out the window for a few seconds.

Weapon, pockets, window. Weapon, pockets, window.

“Hey, Joe?”

Joe twitched in surprise.

“Sorry. Didn’t mean to startle you,” Shelley said.

Joe looked at the rear-view mirror and into Shelley’s impossibly large eyes.

“No, it’s nothing Shelley.” He forced himself to smile, trying to make it look soothing rather than manic.

“I was just thinking... What if this place is like the other ones?”

The smile melted from his face. It was something he had considered as well. He put the smile back on. “We’ll figure it out, Shelley. Don’t worry.”

“Maybe we should try for another pharmacy.”

“Yeah. Maybe we will. But you know what? I think this place will work out.” He glanced out the window. “This whole area looks deserted.” He wasn’t exaggerating.

And then, there it was.

Healthlife Hospital stood like a solitary tombstone in the landscape. The area was a new development, the only completed buildings being the hospital and a hotel about two blocks away. The rest was a combination of unfinished construction, pavement, and grassy fields.

They drove past the beginnings of what seemed like an office building, the metal beams of its skeleton reaching into the gray skies in apparent supplication. Joe’s gaze drifted up to the clouds and back down to the hospital, which now loomed in front of him and his companions. The building’s exterior, darkened by the shade, exuded an ominous look, and Joe couldn’t help but shiver at the sight.

John noticed. “Nerves?”

Joe was about to make an excuse, then thought the better of it. “Yeah. This place, it looks ... Spooky.”

“Yeah, it does.” John looked out his window as Shelley pulled their vehicle into the parking lot. “Abandoned,” he added.

It did look abandoned. The lot was completely empty, other than a couple of ambulances and a police cruiser. It still looked spooky. Especially seeing that police cruiser with its front doors wide open. There wasn’t a person in sight.

Suppose I should be thankful for that.

John appeared to pick up his thought. “We might have gotten lucky here. It sure beats Memorial.”

Joe could only agree with that. Their first stop, Memorial General Hospital, had looked more like a warzone than a place for health care. They’d driven past that place and noted all the barriers and military vehicles, conspicuously parked on the street side of the barriers.

Meant to keep stuff in, not out.

Then they’d seen the tank. Its turret was pointed toward the hospital. A pile of debris where the front entrance used to be showed evidence of its use. The pile of human detritus strewn between the hospital and those barriers left little to the imagination.

They’d seen movement in that debris and beyond, inside the hospital.

They’d quickly driven on.
